Imperial Innovations raises £30m

Imperial Innovations, the technology commercialisation business quoted on London’s Alternative Investment Market, has raised £30m after successfully placing more than 8.1 million of its shares with institutional investors. The company plans to use the new funds to invest further in its existing spinout portfolio as well as future intellectual property emerging from London’s Imperial College and other sources.

Reviewing innovation

The Sainsbury’s Review provided many good suggestions for rationalising and improving innovation in the UK, but there was less emphasis on securing the basic science from which innovation eventually emerges. Just a few days later, Research Councils UK published “Excellence with Impact”, the latest stage of their thrust to increase the economic impact of the research they fund.

CambridgeSoft chooses AIM over Nasdaq

The Alternative Investment Market received a further boost for its reputation as a global home for technology firms this month as yet another USbased company announced it intended to float on London’s junior market. Massachusetts software business CambridgeSoft said it would seek admission for its stock on AIM.

Biofusion sells portfolio companies to Morvus

Two portfolio companies of technology transfer business Biofusion have been sold to a privatelyowned pharmaceutical company just days after Biofusion raised its equity holdings in both companies to 50%. The sales of Cardiff Biologicals and Cardiff ProTides to Morvus Technology means that Biofusion now has a remaining portfolio of 23 companies from its partnerships with Sheffield and Cardiff universities.

deltaDOT gets another £3m

Imperial College spinout deltaDOT has received a further £3m from investors, completing its fourth round of funding. The funds will be used to increase production capacity for the company’s ‘Peregrine’ system – a high performance capillary electrophoresis instrument for the separation of proteins, peptides, nucleic acids, small molecules and pathogens

Southampton University spinout Perpetuum has raised $10m to fund the commercialisation of its vibration energy-harvesting generator. The device generates an electric current from the vibrations produced by machines.

Frontier grows DAB market share

Wireless chip designer Frontier Silicon reported further progress this month, revealing that it has now shipped more than five million DAB integrated circuits and modules, as well as securing more than 10 design wins for its Venice 6 Wi-Fi radio solution.
